Electricity Consumption Drops in Ukraine: Severe Weather Cuts Power to 300 Settlements

19.08.2026 11:06

Ukraine’s power grid is recording a significant drop in electricity consumption amid cooler temperatures and higher generation from household solar power plants. At the same time, severe weather conditions and Russian shelling have left consumers without electricity across several regions.

Consumption Trends

Today, August 19, as of 09:30, electricity consumption was 9.5% lower compared to the same time on the previous day. The primary drivers were falling air temperatures across all regions and clear skies over most of the country, which boosted rooftop and residential solar output, thereby easing grid demand.

Yesterday, August 18, the daily peak consumption occurred in the morning and was 3.3% lower than Monday’s peak, driven by reduced air conditioning use.

Grid operators recommend shifting the use of energy-intensive appliances to daytime hours—between 10:00 and 16:00—to coincide with peak generation from industrial solar farms.

Severe Weather Impact

Due to adverse weather conditions, including thunderstorms and strong wind gusts, 300 settlements across six regions experienced full or partial power outages this morning:

  • Kyiv region;

  • Poltava region;

  • Sumy region;

  • Cherkasy region;

  • Chernihiv region;

  • Kirovohrad region.

Distribution system operator (oblenergo) repair crews are actively working to restore damaged power lines.

Shelling Damage

Following Russian strikes on energy infrastructure, new power outages were recorded in the Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, and Sumy regions. Emergency repair works are underway wherever the security situation permits.
