The International Monetary Fund (IMF) warns that Ukraine will face a significant electricity shortage this winter, which could reach 3-4 GW. This is stated in the IMF's updated Memorandum on Economic and Financial Policies with Ukraine under the fifth review of the loan programme.
The deficit is due to the damage to half of the generating capacity, including thermal and hydroelectric power plants, as a result of Russian missile attacks.
The IMF emphasises that the Ukrainian authorities have developed a multifaceted strategy to overcome the energy crisis. The plan includes an increase in generation by 1 GW (in particular, using gas turbines) by the end of 2024, imports of electricity from the EU of more than 2 GW, and repair of thermal facilities.
In the gas market, Ukraine plans to meet most of its needs through domestic production, but there will be a need to import up to 3 billion cubic metres of gas, the IMF said.
