Nearly 2 Million Homes Left in Darkness: DTEK Pulls Off the Impossible After Massive Strikes in May

Despite constant safety challenges and the immense difficulties of wartime, specialists from DTEK Grids distribution system operators managed to restore power to residents of nearly 1.6 thousand settlements. In total, electricity was restored for nearly 2 million Ukrainian homes blacked out by shelling across four regions in May (factoring in that power had to be restored to some customers dozens of times).

Repair crews deploy to sites and begin restoration work as quickly as possible—immediately after receiving official clearance from the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the State Emergency Service. Throughout May, power engineers worked continuously to repair equipment both in frontline areas and in regions further away from the combat zone.

The largest volume of restoration work was recorded in the Donetsk region, which remains the epicenter of the most active hostilities. Here, specialists restored power to nearly 1.3 million homes in one month.

Other regions also suffered significant strikes:

  • Dnipropetrovsk region: power supply restored for nearly 607 thousand homes;

  • Odesa region: 76.7 thousand households blacked out by attacks were reconnected;

  • Kyiv region: despite all difficulties, light was brought back to 22.1 thousand homes.

"Despite the continuous enemy attacks on energy facilities in May, our specialists keep holding the energy front. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, we have restored power to 45.5 million families in the Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, and Donetsk regions, as well as in the capital. This figure is extraordinarily large and keeps growing because some facilities have been repaired dozens of times. Every deployment means working under conditions of increased danger, following clearance from the military and the State Emergency Service, with the full understanding that the threat could recur at any moment. And we continue to fight for light in the homes of Ukrainians," emphasized Alina Bondarenko, CEO of DTEK Grids.

The company's specialists continue to work in close coordination with the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the State Emergency Service to promptly restore damaged grids across all designated regions, including the zones of the fiercest battles.
