Ukraine and Poland to expand gas import capacity: New project phase launched

The Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU) has received approval from the national regulator (NEURC) to implement a joint project with Poland aimed at increasing natural gas import capacity. This decision marks a new stage in expanding fuel supplies from the European Union and further integrating Ukraine into the European energy market.

A joint incremental capacity auction is scheduled for July 6, 2026, on the GSA (Gas System Auctions Platform). The project involves the allocation of two capacity levels based on previous market demand assessments:

  • Level 1: 6.98 million cubic meters per day (for gas years 2030/2031 to 2044/2045).

  • Level 2: 10.20 million cubic meters per day (for gas years 2032/2033 to 2046/2047).

The initiative has received synchronized approval from the Polish regulator (URE). Future implementation depends on the auction results and a successful economic test. If market demand is confirmed, GTSOU and the Polish operator GAZ-SYSTEM will proceed to the practical phase of developing the necessary cross-border infrastructure.

Expanding capacity on the Polish route is a strategic move for Ukraine’s energy security. Key benefits include:

  • Broader access to the European gas market.

  • Reduced reliance on high-risk supply routes.

  • Enhanced flexibility and reliability of the energy system under wartime conditions.

The development of this interconnector aligns with the long-term strategy of full integration between the Ukrainian and European gas markets.
