Ukraine Increases Electricity Imports as NPP Maintenance Season Begins

Ukraine has increased electricity imports following the start of the planned maintenance campaign at Ukrainian nuclear power plants (NPPs), according to monitoring data from ExPro.

Since March 7, 2026, electricity imports to Ukraine have resumed an upward trend. While the average daily import volume dropped to 27,000 MWh between March 4–6, it rose to 32,500 MWh by the following day (March 7). On Monday, March 9, the volume of electricity imported to Ukraine from EU countries and Moldova increased to 35,000 MWh.

Market sources cited by ExPro indicate that this shift is linked to one of the NPP units entering a scheduled maintenance shutdown. In total, Ukraine has imported over 280,000 MWh of electricity since the beginning of March.

As previously reported by ExPro, Ukraine had briefly resumed exports at a minimal level on March 5 and 6 (totaling only 37 MWh). However, between March 7 and 9, electricity exports were non-existent, despite the availability of cross-border capacity.
