Shares of energy sources in the DAM, IDM and the balancing market in Ukraine: 10 months of 2024

For 10 months of 2024, 20.9 million MWh of electricity was sold in the day-ahead market and the intraday market, and 2.4 million MWh in the balancing market.

This is confirmed by the data published by Market Operator JSC and the NPC Ukrenergo, ExPro reports.

Day-ahead and intraday markets

In the first 10 months of this year, electricity generated from natural gas accounted for the largest share in the total sales structure – 21.43%. Electricity from nuclear power plants is in second place (21.32%), and from hydroelectric power plants (16.6%) – in third. The share of electricity generated by solar power plants reached 13.58% in the period under review. The peak for solar generation in the spot segments of the Ukrainian market was in July.

Over the same period last year (January-October 2023), the share of electricity generated by NPPs (24.95%) and hydroelectric power plants (20.14%) was the largest.

A balancing market

Electricity from hydroelectric power plants in the balancing market accounted for 54% of sales in 10 months of 2024. Coal (22%) was the second largest energy source, followed by natural gas (19.5%).

Current price caps in the electricity market

The Regulator decided not to change the price caps in the electricity mar-ket since December.

1) Maximum marginal prices in the DAM and IDM are:
- UAH 5,600.00/MWh from 00:00 to 7:00 and from 11:00 to 17:00;
- UAH 6,900.00/MWh from 7:00 to 11:00 and from 23:00 to 24:00;
- UAH 9,000.00/MWh from 17:00 to 23:00.
The minimum marginal price is UAH 10.00/MWh.


2) Maximum marginal prices in the balancing market are:
- UAH 6,600.00/MWh – from 00:00 to 7:00;
- UAH 8,250.00/MWh – from 7:00 to 17:00 and from 23:00 to 24:00;
- UAH 10,000.00/MWh – from 17:00 to 23:00.
The minimum marginal price is UAH 0.01/MWh.
