Lithuania’s Public Security Service (VST) was initially scheduled to take over the protection of the Alytus switchyard and transformer substation of the LitPol Link power interconnection with Poland from a private security company in April. However, the Government approved the Interior Ministry’s proposal to expedite this transition and postpone the deadline to January.
The Lithuanian Interior Ministry clarified that the new procedure was developed in view of the planned disconnection of the Baltic States' grids from the Russian-controlled IPS/UPS system and synchronisation with the Continental European grid on February 8.
The decision is also influenced by the tense security situation in the Baltic Sea region, where electricity and communications cables have recently been damaged.

Before the disconnection of the power systems of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia from Russia, incidents with submarine cables in the Baltic Sea became more frequent.
