The IAEA continued its monitoring mission at substations key to NPP operation

It is noted that the Minister of Energy Herman Halushchenko and the IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi discussed the extension of the mission during an extraordinary session of the Agency's Board of Governors initiated by Ukraine. The parties agreed on a schedule of visits.
The IAEA mission will be carried out in rotation at the substations which are key to nuclear safety.
Background. Due to a massive Russian missile attack, five of Ukraine's nine operating nuclear power units reduced their output on Friday, December 13. The IAEA Board of Governors adopted a Ukrainian draft resolution addressing the threats posed by attacks on critical energy infrastructure essential for the safety of Ukrainian nuclear power plants. The resolution was passed with 22 votes in favour.
As reported earlier, during the Russian shelling on the night of November 16 and in the morning of November 17, four electrical substations, which the IAEA has identified as important for nuclear safety, were damaged.
Prior to the latest attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, IAEA teams visited seven substations in September and October to assess the damage caused by the August attacks.
