Power Consumption Rising in Ukraine: Bad Weather and Russian Attacks Cause Blackouts

Electricity consumption in Ukraine is showing an upward trend.

As of the morning of July 28, adverse weather conditions and ongoing attacks by Russian forces have left numerous settlements without power across several regions. Energy workers are actively working to restore power supplies and are urging citizens to use electricity wisely.

Impact of Shelling and Severe Weather

Russian forces continue to target civilian energy infrastructure. Droning and artillery strikes overnight and into the morning caused new power outages in the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, and Sumy regions. Emergency restoration work is already underway wherever the security situation permits.

Additionally, severe weather—including heavy rain, hail, and strong wind gusts—left 228 settlements fully or partially without power across five regions: Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, Kyiv, and Poltava. Local distribution system operator repair crews are working to repair damaged power lines and restore service.

Consumption Dynamics and Recommendations

On the morning of July 28, power grid demand was 6% higher than at the same time the previous day. The primary reason is cloudy and rainy weather in parts of Ukraine, which reduced the output of domestic solar power installations and led to an increase in power drawn from the main grid.

On July 27, the daily peak consumption occurred in the evening, reaching 3.9% higher than the maximum recorded on the previous working day (Friday). This increase was driven by significantly higher temperatures, which prompted widespread use of air conditioning units.

Energy officials urge the public to practice efficient power consumption and to schedule the use of energy-intensive appliances between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, when commercial solar power plants operate at peak efficiency. Residents are also advised to monitor updates on the official websites and social media channels of their local distribution system operators.
