This week, the Verkhovna Rada will consider the Government's draft law No. 11146 on the siting, design, and construction of Khmelnytsky NPP Units 3 and 4 with a total design capacity of 2.2 GW. This is reported by the UNIAN news agency with reference to the draft agenda of the plenary sessions of the Parliament.

Khmelnytsky NPP Unit 3 is currently 75% complete, and Unit 4 is 25% complete. It is expected that the completion of Unit 3 will take 2.5-3 years, and the completion of Unit 4 will take about another year and a half.
The construction is planned to be financed mainly through loans and Energoatom's funds, without involving the state budget.
The project has received support from international partners, including the United States and the EU. The American company Westinghouse will supply nuclear fuel for the new units, which will contribute to Ukraine's energy independence from Russian suppliers.
"For Ukraine, the development of nuclear power is a strategic task. During the war, nuclear power proved its reliability and critical importance for Ukraine. Today, NPPs cover about 60% of electricity consumption in the country and are the backbone of our power system. Our task is to continue the development of nuclear power together with our partners, including the development of additional generating capacities," Government Portal cited Roman Andarak, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine, speaking at the UN climate conference, COP29, held in Baku (Azerbaijan).
As reported by Ukrainian Energy, Ukraine may lose a strategic asset if Khmelnytsky NPP Units 3 and 4 are not completed. Yurii Sapozhnykov, Chairman of the Board of the Kyiv Research and Design Institute Energoproekt, is convinced of this.
The IAEA experts will advise on the construction of the Khmelnytsky NPP units.
