In addition, the country plans to resume uranium mining to become independent of raw material supplies from Kazakhstan.
Investments in the energy sector will be aimed at extending the life of existing energy facilities, as well as at building new facilities. Nuclear capacity will be increased through the deployment of small modular reactors.
"There are six strategic objectives: energy security, energy efficiency, universal access to energy, affordability, economic competitiveness, and completing Romania's electrification," Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja emphasised.
Romania is seeking to revitalise the closed Doicesti coal-fired power plant by deploying NuScale SMRs – VOYGR. And at Cernavoda NPP, it is seeking to complete two full-scale units using CANDU technology.
