In 2024, natural gas production at the Troll field in the North Sea, operated by the Norwegian Equinor, rose to a historic high of 42.5 bcm, 10% more than in 2022, when the previous record was set (38.8 bcm).

According to Equinor, Norway is the largest supplier of natural gas to Europe after a sharp decline in Russian gas supplies following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The Troll field meets about 11% of the European Union's natural gas needs.
The production at the Troll field (the largest oil and gas field on the Norwegian continental shelf) began in 1996. Troll licensees are Equinor, Petoro, Norske Shell, TotalEnergies and ConocoPhillips.
The upgrading of the Kollsnes onshore gas processing plant in recent years has been the main reason for the natural gas production record at the Troll field.
